one hundred seventy-eight

the real deal
The 2012 Randolph Arts Guild SUPER Art Affaire thwarted the forces of dullness last night.  All sorts of super heros converged at the Pinewood Country Club near Asheboro to show their support for the arts in Randolph County.  This year the imagination imitated reality -- the real super heros -- the patrons, the sponsors, the artists, the Randolph Arts Guild -- all made a great party that celebrates creativity.

A highlight of the night was to see "Trussit" (see post one hundred seventy-seven) go up on the auction block.  A terrific bidding war ensued.  It ended up being physically the largest work (3ft x 4ft) of art auctioned.  Add a few more pounds for the robust black frame.  (Kudos to board member Art Martinez for lugging the painting around during the battle.)  Several quick bids popped up from the crowd.  They came and went eventually narrowing the field to two entrenched camps.  And these two highly interested parties were barely separated by a large interior pillar.  One contender eventually ripped up his bid paddle in disgust only to come back for a few more volleys, bid paddle pieces in hand.  People started clapping.  Then came the yelling, supporting each camp for one. more. bid.  Eventually the smoke cleared, the auctioneer wiped his brow and got a sip of water.

"Trussit" commanded the highest price of the night among all the wonderful art up for grabs.  A big round of applause to Becca & Scott Ainsworth on their new acquisition.  As I am told this jazzy, night-life painting will reside in the "brew room" of their home.  Fitting.

Let this show of force not overshadow that it's always a good time when the forces of creativity unite to save the world from narrow minds, drab lifestyles, and unfashionable choices in capes.
