Eric Abernethy gives it the fisheye lens treatment for these documentary photos. Pilot Elementary is the place. Ms. Lake's fourth grade art students shine as they complete the Exquisite Corpse project during my visit as an "Artist In The Schools" Program.

Sheets of paper are folded accordian-style into quarters. They are passed around several times among the students. The students create different sections of the body. The results are quite humorous composite creatures.

The drawing game is called "Exquisite Corpse" and came about around the early 1900s. Artists would take turns drawing sections of paper not knowing what was on the other sections. When all sections were filled out the paper is unfolded and the hilarity ensues. This approach helps us remember that not everything we create will be 'perfect'. The students also got an eye opener on how working with each other creates something that would not have existed singularly.

Pilot Elementary along with all the other Guilford County Elementary Schools are given an opportunity to host a working artist to share with the fourth grade art students. Each artist talks about their art and leads a
project with the students. This 37 year old program is called "Artist In The Schools." And is supported by the Green Hill Center for NC Art, also in Greensboro.

Each school visited taught me something different about the challenges, needs and celebrations every art teacher encounters in the classroom. Numerous times other academic subjects the students were studying came up -- as did references to previous art projects. We got to discuss basic composition, color theory, mood, and body language. More photos from other schools I visited may be found on previous blog entries.
Thanks to Ms. Lake at Pilot Elementary and all the teachers in the
Guilford County Schools system for inviting me to come visit with their
art students. This is a incredible opportunity for everyone to enjoy
the arts. Thanks also to Green Hill Center for asking me to be
involved. Finally,
thanks to Eric Abernethy for these awesome images. Eric's photographic work is fantastic! (
