two hundred thirty

It is a matter of opinion.

Here's a snap taken by photographer Joanna Hudson.  She and I are included the 59th Annual Durham Arts Guild Juried Exhibition.   We recently attended the juror's lecture -- a talk by Edie Carpenter.  We learned much about upcoming programs at DAG.  We also learned about the history of and upcoming opportunities at Green Hill -- the arts organization Edie is the curator for.

When I asked Edie for input regarding "A Lovely Brick Wall"  she commented she had seen this piece before and she 'gets' the layers of bricks that my recent work includes.  She also felt the hearts are not needed in this piece.  And that the piece speaks of love without them.  A lovely brick wall indeed.

It is refreshing to interact with the juror -- or to even have discourse regarding artwork interpretations in a professional arena.  Sure, artwork on a gallery or museum wall has already been selected as having importance.  However there is a significant history regarding the artists' voices as well as others' interpretations of art -- and those views being aired in the gallery context.  And I'll take commentary over silence any day.  Thanks to Durham Art Guild and Edie Carpenter for the opportunity to share.
